Dhoom (2004)

Action Comedy 5/10

What did I just watch?  From the "Dirty Dancing" song at the beginning to the absolutely ridiculous over-the-top action scenes at the end, this show was just "what?"  Basically it's like Fast and Furious meets like Ocean's 11, only not even as good as either of those.

I hear the second one is better, but I wanted to get this one out of the way first.  I'm not sorry I did, it was hilariously bad.  Nice if you need a good laugh at a cheesy action comedy that is so bad.  That's basically what this was.  Oh how we laughed every time it tried to be so cool singing "Dhoom!" while doing weird camera tricks.  It was like the film was saying "burn!" or "booyah" which was never really cool, and especially hilarious if a film is cinematographically saying that.  Hahahaha.

So we have this motorcycle gang of thieves who are being chased by this super cop, Jai (Abhishek Bachchan), who is pretty no-nonsense with a power slap (that is after the random sexy dance at the beginning that was completely off turning and out of character), who has to team up with a wild motorcycle racer/fence dealer named Ali (Uday Chopra), who falls in love with every pretty girl he sees.  The leader of the motorcycle gang, Kabir, is super smart, also super hot (John Abraham).  He and Jai get into a outsmart each other pride war.  There are chase scenes, huge caper type plans, and you know, super cheesy action.

Anyways, the part that bothered me the most is that the women in the movie were just there for the sex appeal and maybe some humor, but talk about complete objectification.  Lame.  They are pretty much characterless, and their bodies are completely highlighted through clothing, dancing, and especially camera shots.  What would you expect from this genre of film though?

It was super bad and over the top, but still humorously watchable, if you are in the mood for something so cheesy bad that it's hilarious.  But that is the only way I would recommend it.  You'll have to wait to see my opinion of Dhoom 2.  It's doubtful that it could get worse, so maybe it will be better like everyone has told me.
