2 States (2014)

2 States     Family Drama 8/10

So I have this coworker friend who I introduced Bollywood to, around the time I watched Bang Bang!  Now she is watching them more often than me, and so recommends them to me all the time.  She bought Diwale, so we could watch it together, and now has me watching 2 States.  She even read the book first, so basically she is amazing.  This film is pretty good too.  It's that real, awkward, wedding and family drama, especially poignant to India, but everyone can relate to it.  It's about how marriage is not just about two people in love, but about the uniting of two families and two cultures.

This sort of thing is awkward enough in any marriage situation, but this story ups the drama by bringing in real cultural differences and prejudices.  Krish (Arjun Kapoor) is from Punjab and Ananya (Alia Bhatt) is from Tamil.  It's north vs south, vegetarian vs non-vegetarian, complete with language barriers too, so you know your are in for an awkward and lovable time.

This is a modern story, so don't be shocked at all the kissing and even the fact that they are sleeping together all the time.  I warned you, so you don't have to be surprised.  It is about the younger generation falling in love while getting their MBAs at university and then having to convince the older generation to look passed all the differences and prejudices, and while doing that, they find they need to learn and grow themselves too.

It's slower paced, it doesn't have as many song and dance numbers, but what it has is pretty good.  I like how they tried to represent both cultures throughout the movie, and especially in the dance or wedding scenes.  It was really interesting to see from the outside perspective, not knowing that much about either.  The first half is them falling in love and then convincing their parents to like their boyfriend or girlfriend, and the second half is them trying to convince their families to like each other.  It builds very nicely with the layers of problems, each getting bigger as they move to the next level of their relationship, with all the problems that brings.

It was a little hard to follow the flashbacks, since it was told as him telling his therapist in sessions, but it was at two different times in his life, one where he was at the worst part of their relationship, and one when he was starting a new chapter and was nervous, basically more of an epilogue.  Since I was multitasking (see what I get for tying to be crafty) this was a little hard to follow, but if you have the leisure to watch it with no distractions, it should be understandable, there are plenty of visual clues and the story line is clearly written.  Basically it was a solid movie and well worth the watch.
