Dilwale (2015)

Diwale     Romance Action Comedy 7/10

This was maybe not the most cohesively put together film, but it made up for it in the special effects and definitely in the music and visuals.  There was a lot going on with this film story-wise, but since it was an action film it was on the shorter side, leaving only the bare minimum for story telling.  So this is not about the couples falling in love, its about what happened after, and history repeating itself, and then fates crossing again.

So we have two generations of children.  The older, mature generation who grew up as the children of two rival dons (like mafia) and their way younger siblings who have no clue what went on in the past, so they are more immature and carefree.  I loved the way they represented that.  It was like two stories meshed into one.  One is a romantic comedy and the other is a action melodrama.  They are represented by two types of music and two very different visual styles.  The younger generation is very hip, with bright colors and full of slapstick.  The older generation has rich, deep colors, perfect use of black and white, and more emotional ballad type music.  It was a pleasure to watch.

However, because there was so much going on, it actually felt very rushed for a Bollywood.  It could have afforded to spend more time on the story, to make all the transitions smoother and crank the feels up more.  It wasn't ever confusing, but I would have loved to see more interactions, especially between Shahrukh and Kajol, because you know I love both of them.  They fell in love so fast, and then were torn apart so fast, and then even in the end it seemed that everything resolved itself so fast.  It's not like it had to happen any other way, I just would have loved it to be expanded a little longer, to give us more of a chance to soak in those rich feelings.

I did wish that some of the more ridiculous comedy was left out, so there would be more room for the feels.  I didn't like Veer's buddy at all.  He was a flipping thief, and kind of a tool too.  I could have done with less of him, and the Mani-King car stealing plot, and more of the Romeo and Juliet x 2 story line, because let's be honest, you can never get enough of Shahrukh and Kajol.

I absolutely loved the music.  I will listen to it on repeat.  To make it all the better, all the visuals that went along with the music was so stunning.  We have Kajol, wearing the most beautiful clothes in the world, running and standing with the wind blowing her around, looking sexy with Shahrukh, also looking sexy in the most beautiful locations in the world, all with beautiful music.  That is Gerua.  Or you have the masterful use of black and white with select use of color (mostly blue) during Janam Janam.  All of it is soulful, which means that you just want to throw out your arms and wail along with those golden voices playback singers.  I know I do.  Seriously though.  The dance songs were less my favorite because they were so cheesy, being the younger siblings and all, but I liked them all too.  They were delightful to laugh at.  Basically the whole movie was delightful, even though I knew it could obviously be better.

Favorite Songs:
Gerua and Janam Janam

Dance Song:
Manma Emotion Jaage
