Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007)

Watched this for Rani.  It's a very interesting film.  The title means something like "My veil is stained" and the tag line is "Journey of a Woman." This basically the story of a girl who, to save her family, becomes an "exclusive call girl" or fancy sauce prostitute.

What it does really well is show the journey, from her innocent childhood days, to her needing to leave home to make money for her family.  Once in Mumbai everything is not as expected and she can't find a job.  Eventually she is desperate enough to take up the nasty dude's offer, but that only ruins her.  But her friend in Mumbai is able to help her pull herself up and become more classy and pull together some of her self esteem.  Still the song showing her transformation from innocent to hardened call girl is painfully well done.

The over arching message is redemption and purity of intentions.  She thinks she is beyond hope and lives for her family, but eventually her family finds out and she is able to redeem herself.  It is very idealistic in this way.  Also there are lots of hot men in this that act as redeeming figures as well.  From the hot dude that likes her little sister to the guest appearance of Abhishek Bachchan.  They men in it, well the good ones anyways, are the light part of the movie.  The happy part that cheers us up and saves the day, etc.  I think this movie would have been too sad without these attractive dudes.

The point is that through the purity of her intentions she is not truly ruined, because her heart is still pure.  Idealistic.  However, I did like this show, but it is not a "fun" show to watch at times.  It's rather maddening and heartbreaking.  But the ending is happy enough to make up for all that, even if it's too idealistic to be realistic really.  We're happy it works out that way.
