Pardes (1997)

Drama 4/10

I love my India.  Let's sing that song a million and one times.  I love my India.  Let's brainwash us all by singing this 10 minute song at least 5 times in the movie!  Haha, well, this was made to celebrate the independence day or whatever it's called there and it is ridiculous.  It is clearly meant to promote patriotism and all that, but they do it by demonizing America a bit, which is sad.  It is interesting though, because it is like the opposite of DDLJ, as it is the Indian girl goes to America instead of the London girl goes to India, and the jerk fiance is American instead of Indian.  Shahrukh still gets beat up again before the same dad decides that he is the right one for the girl.

First, this song "I love My India" is super long.  They just kept going and going and I'm like where is Shahrukh?  It was like 27 minutes before we even saw Shahrukh's face.  This super homeland loving Indian girl gets offered an arranged marriage proposal from the dad from DDLJ, who is an Indian who immigrated to America and got super successful there.  However he loves India still and wants his completely American son to marry an Indian girl.  She likes the dad, who is like an uncle to her, and so she agrees.

The dad then sends his "little master," or the orphan boy he is sponsoring, to India to help his son not mess it up.  He grew up in India, but then got a sponsorship from the America family and he is a singer and runs a garage/dance studio.  Shahrukh is being too brutally honest about how to please the son fiance, and thus makes a bad impression.  They pull pranks on him, he figures it out, and then they become friends.  He is also able to make the first meeting smooth, and the girl agrees to move to America on a trial engagement before getting married and staying there.

Then we go to America.  Everything is foreign, she is homesick, she spends too much time with Shahrukh, who is the only one she feels comfortable with.  The American family are all pretentious jerks who make her feel like an idiot.  Her fiance ignores her and when he doesn't, he is possessive and jealous about how much time she spends with Shahrukh.  She goes with her fiance to Vegas, almost gets raped, has to run away, is miraculously saved by Shahrukh who then takes her back to India, where more shiz goes down and it is like another DDLJ dramatic ending.

So... not a favorable impression of the U.S., they kind of threw us under the bus there in an attempt to promote homeland India love.  I'll all for loving India, but not at the expense of other countries.  Also, stop singing that "I love my India" song.  It's annoying and repetitive.

The end.

Only Song In The Movie:
I Love My India
