Aladin (2009)

A Bollywood retelling of Aladdin?  Let's do this.  Actually, it's not actually the literally story of Aladdin, which is what makes it so great.  It's just based on the story of Aladdin with a modern day Bollywood twist.  Also it had Amitabh Bachchan as the genie so I couldn't resist.

So Aladin (Ritesh Deshmukh) is named after the storybook Aladdin and has grown up dealing with the consequences of that, being made fun of, etc.  His parents believed in the legend of the magic lamp and actually died looking for it or something like that.  Then an American exchange student named Jasmine (Jacqueline Fernandez) arrives on campus and Aladin is instantly smitten (to the point where he literally runs into a pillar while watching her.  Then she is tricked into gifting him a lamp by the bullies, and of course it's magic.

While it's super cheesy, especially with the Genie's character and use of powers, it's also intriguing and super creepy.  The bad dude is the ringmaster of a circus of creepy bad guys, and so it's awesomely creepy and sinister as well as cheesy and lighthearted.  It's good because it doesn't take itself serious while still being a serious movie.  I was super impressed with it.  It's a fun little movie.  Also, while Ritesh does a good job being a nerdy looser type at first, he looking shockingly hot when dressed up in a tailcoat and stuff.  Wow, Aladin.  Rawr.
