Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)
After the success of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham with the whole star studded cast, I broke down and watched this one, which I had been debating for a while because while I love all these actors, the plot seemed not cool. Basically this movie is about adultery. Yep, kinda hard to like this one.
Of course I didn't like this one. The plot and moral of the story were dumb. However it was really well acted and the cinematography was amazing. It's probably the only movie where I can say that I outright hated Shahrukh. I hated his character and he did such a good job making me hate his character to.
So Rani meets Shahrukh on her wedding day and he talks her into getting married even though she's only best friends with her fiance (Abhishek). Shahrukh married his best friend (Preity) five years ago and tells her not to waste her time looking for a true love that might never happen. Then he gets hit by a car, which sucks because he was a football (soccer) player and he just lost his chance to sign a sweet contract. Five years later or something like that.
Rani's always felt like she "settled" and her marriage is not so good. Shahrukh's marriage is hanging by a thread because he's a grouchy jerkface with issues surrounding his feeling useless as a husband and man as he can only coach soccer and not play. He is resentful of his wife's success too. They meet again at the train station when Rani overhears the harsh way Shahrukh is talking to his son and thinks he's this serial child killer and tries to "save" his son. She ends up in the hospital when he throws his son's soccer ball at her. Preity and Abhishek both seem like nice normal people, and become friends. Amitabh (who plays his actual son's father) also becomes friends with Shahrukh's mom (Kirron Kher). This sparks the idea that the two can become friends to help each other save their marriages. But naturally leads them to fall in love with each other.
So, we can tell the whole time that this is going to be inevitably horrible, and we really hate watching it. They fall in love, get jealous when they have to see the other person with their actual spouse, and see their already bad marriages getting worse. Not happy. Also, their spouses are both really nice and sweet people that really don't deserve their bad spouses in the first place, which is only sad because they loved them. The reason both leads "settled" for their spouses was because the spouses were in love with them. But that doesn't make for a good marriage. At the end they try to moralize everything by saying that you should never settle for friendship in marriage, because it will just leave hurt people when true love comes. Like it's always better to wait for true love or some crap like that. Whatever. While this film was well made it was not a good movie. The songs are pretty though, I guess.
