Love Aaj Kal (2009)
This one is an interesting film, as it follows two alternate story lines, with the past being told to help the present. Saif Ali Khan plays both the young version of the man telling about the past, Veer Singh, and the main man in the present, Jai, as well. Veer is telling his story to Jai to keep him from messing up his love life through putting career and other obligations first as Jai and his girlfriend Meera (Deepika Padukone), break up.
I really liked Saif as young Veer. He was very manly in his turban, beard and hand constantly on his hip in a manly fashion. Veer is also a romantic. As he and the girl he loves' families are different, he is a poor Sikh, and Harleen's family is wealthier. They haven't even spoken ever, but he vows to marry her, traveling miles to Calcutta (where Harleen moves) just to see her face.
Present day Jai is more of a modern, free spirited type, not really believing in romance, and he and his girlfriend Meera don't believe in tying each other down, which really means that their relationship is doomed to failure unless it changes- obviously through Veer Singh's story telling.
This a very good film, and the parallel stories are told very well, with excellent cinematography and editing, which makes both stories more meaningful and beautiful. I was really impressed with this one on many different levels, plus we get to see old fashioned, manly turban Saif, and modern sexy Saif. Win-Win.
