Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008)

SHAHRUKH IS AWESOME!  Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is proof of his amazing acting abilities!  He plays a less than remarkable, cute, little mustached man so well.  "Punjab Power, lighting up your life!"  And then he plays his own alter ego, and other man, as this shy little man tries to win the heart of his wife.  Dressing up as a cocky flashy man will get you noticed, but it will cause problems later.

So Suri is just an ordinary office worker at Punjab Power who goes to visit his old professor for his daughter's wedding.  He falls in love with his professor's daughter at first sight.  Then tragedy strikes and the groom and all the family are killed in an accident on the way, so she's a widow before she's even married.  To make matters worse her father has a heart attack at the news.  Before he dies he asks Suri to marry his daughter, Taani, so she will be taken care of.  In respects to her father's last wishes they agree and are married right before her father's funeral.

So then we have the awkward "we're married now, but I'm really sad and don't really want to face anything, least of all a stranger of a husband."  He's sweet and gives her space, moving into his own attic.  They work out a reasonable compromise, her being a good wife as long as he never expects any love from her, since she doesn't believe in love anymore.  He says he doesn't know what love is (lies!) and says he's happy as long as she's a good wife and helps him keep his respect.

Then she joins a dance class, since she's bored and lonely.  He dresses up cool, to impress her, and goes to watch.  The problem is she can't recognize him, and here the double life problems begin.

This is an awesome film.  I love it.  It's funny, sad, sweet and played very well.  It's probably my favorite role for Anushka Sharma (Taani) and Shahrukh does so well being the quiet little introvert.  Then throw in Vinay Pathak as his friend Bobby and a huge dance number that has cameos from all of Shahrukh's famous leading ladies (including Kajol, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukerji) and you have an awesome film.
