Yeh Dillagi! (1994)
So, letting my actor crush decide what to watch next is not the best thing to do always, although it usually produces some kind of results. I guess that was what lead me to watch Fanaa all too soon, but in the case of looking for Saif Ali Khan films, it lead me to discover Yeh Dillagi!
One problem was that this film is old. Bollywoods have come a long way since 1994, and so have Saif and Kajol. But even old films can be decent. Yeh Dilagi! is not one of them. I was interested in it because it was the Bollywood remaking of Sabrina, one of my favorite films growing up (both the Humphrey Bogart and Harrison Ford versions) and this version had Saif playing the David character and Kajol as the Sabrina role.
It was too cheesy for me, and I usually can stomach cheesiness. But I couldn't do more than skim this one. The writing wasn't good, the songs made me cringe (as did Saif's hair and clothing) and the lead dude was not cute. Akshay Kumar is normally an attractive man, but Yeh Dillagi must have been a low point for him cause... no.
Thankfully all three of the main leads have grown in their acting skills and attractiveness, because this film did none of them favors.
But in case you want to know what it's about, this is the song that stopped me from wanting to watch and sent me to the fast forward button. Normally I would be all for songs all about Saif's hotness, even if they are blatantly showing us what a lady's man he is, but oh that hair! No, no, no! Sadly this is actually one of the best songs in the film. When it came to this song, I couldn't take it any more.
To be very honest, I will probably end up watching this film again and loving it. Just watching those songs again made me want to. Its something you definitely have to be in the mood for, well prepared, and well versed in older Bollywood. Still, not the best film, but good actors that I love no matter what they've done in their early days.
