3 Idiots (2009)
All I can say is that Aamir Khan does it again. This movie is fabulous. It's meaningful, dramatic, lovely, hilarious, and delightful.
It's about challenging the school systems of India which focus too much on memorization and book learning instead of internalizing knowledge and thinking outside the box. Three friends are considered "idiots" as they push for real learning. Rancho (Aamir Khan) is a genius who is as unconventional as he is excited about learning, but he is considered a bad influence on his two friends who are normal students with families to support and impress. At a prestigious engineering university, it has all the great humor of a bunch of college age boys, as well as the hard truths of what the pressure of the system causes. It's hilarious, sweet, uplifting, witty, tragic, pertinent, and very expressive.
Everything about it is so good, from the pranks to the cheesy dance numbers, to the fun, to the hard. The flash back mosaic narrative style lets the story unfold to reveal each important plot element, as the two friends (R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi) go to look for their friend who disappeared right after graduation.
It has some very, very clever parts, such as the "Silencer's" (fondly called that as he silently farts all the time due to the drug he takes to keep him awake so he can cram study more) speech, and every time that Rancho convinces Pia (Kareena Kapoor) that her boyfriend is just a walking price tag.
This movie is so, so good. Loved it.
