Do you need a good cry? If so, Shahrukh Khan is always the way to go. This is like the sadder, more tear filled version of Parineeta. Well, they really have nothing to do with each other, but there are a lot of similarities.
Devdas is about two childhood friends/neighbors who fall in love and then are forced apart in the meanest way, so much so that you dissolve into tears (or rather uncontrollable sobs) at the end and even resort to banging the floor with your fist, if you happen to be sitting on the floor, which I was.
It's probably not fair to compare it to Parineeta, but since I watched that one first, I couldn't help but notice the basic similarities. However, where Parineeta has a happy ending, Devdas is sad sad sad sad. Also Devdas was a much more award winning, popular, and maybe better film, both domestically and internationally. It tied with DDLJ in award winning, which is the top film of all time, so that is saying something. But for all it's goodness and well doneness, it is a sad sad sad movie.
Devdas is from the wealthy family, studied law in England, everything is great, is in love with Parvati (Aishwarya Rai), suddenly things are not so great. Parvati is the neighbor's daughter, and the neighbor's wife was once a entertainer/dancer type deal, and that ruins her marriageability. So Devdas' mom insults Parvati's mom and then the lovers are separated most cruelly. This leads to a decline in Devdas' sanity and a super sad ending.
Now that you know how sad it is, please still watch it. It is a wonderful film, with awesome actors, great dancing and cinematography. Just watch it knowing that it's very sad and you might cry. I literally have no willpower against Shahrukh, however, so I might just cry more than a sane person. He makes that cry face and I immediately tear up, so it might not be so tearful as I think it is... no, it's pretty sad. The ending is so heartbreaking and so well done that it might be impossible to not cry. I guess I just dared you to try and not cry. Do it. Just watch it.

Don't worry. I cried. At least I think I remember that I cried. But then again, I am a crier. It is a seriously beautiful film, and for some odd reason I don't own it...yet. Ah! So beautiful! I hadn't thought about the similarities between it and Parineeta, but I can totally see what you're saying. Ah Devdas! SRK looks particularly amazing in this film.
ReplyDeleteYeah he does. Even when he's reduced to a drunken piece of trash, which is weird. It was really well done though.
DeleteLol. True. SRK, making drunk look sexy.
DeleteSRK makes everything look sexy. Even those horrible 90s baggy suits
