Parineeta (2005)

After all those cheesy ones, I managed to get myself back on track by going back to my first love, Saif Ali Khan.  Parineeta was recommended to my by a friend who I discovered also watches Bollywoods, and she kindly lent it to me.  Thank goodness, because I needed something serious with an actual sexy man (aka Saif, rawr!)

Parineeta or The Married Woman is actually kind of a weird movie.  I'll be honest and say I had a hard time following it at times.  It's very cinematographically dark, and there are times where it's just kind of dark and maybe a bit boring so you don't know what's going on if you aren't paying attention, but the jist of it is this:

Shekhar (Saif) and Lalita (Vidya Balan) are neighbors who grew up together and fell in love.  Then there is a lot of misunderstandings and jealousies, and mean parental connivings that force them apart.  There is also an ugly other guy with a lot of money who comes in to take care of Lalita's struggling family, and that furthers the breach, but then things get worked out.

Also this is more on the scandalous side (not really but for a Bollywood) as there is some sexy time, but Saif has a hot back so we'll just overlook that.  The ending was pretty awesome.  Loved that part.

Another thing that makes this film great is that it is beautifully filmed, has a bunch of cultural plot elements and is based on a pretty good book.  So, yeah, great film.  It's more artsy and not so much dancy... actually I can't think of any dancing scenes, but that's ok.  It's brilliantly done and a very beautiful, if not really sad a times, film.

  1. I love Parineeta but I do agree with you that the film quality is not super awesome. I think it's because it's an arthouse/more Indie film...I have noticed that VinodChopra films don't always make good DVD copies, but they are getting slightly better. Actually, a lot of Bollywood DVDs are totally crap (and those are the legal ones). I know as I've watched the movie more, I feel like I understand it better.

    1. I thought it was a combo of crappy DVD quality and the artsy look. The DVD case looked pretty sketch even with it being an official copy.

    2. Yeah. That might be it. Luckily the Indian film industry film production quality is getting better and better.
