Swades (2004)

Another really good movie.  What I loved about this one is that it's less about the love story between two people and more about falling in love with India.

Shahrukh plays a scientist working on a project for NASA.  He has also just completed his naturalization papers to become an American citizen.  He has lived in the US for a while, and I don't remeber when, but his parents are dead too, so he decides to go back to India to find his old nanny who he had lost touch with and bring her back to live with him in the US.  He traces her back to an old folks home and finds she was taken to a very remote village.  So he follows her there.

This is basically a story about a man who falls in love with his native country again, after being away from it for so long, and then works to bring more equality to this village and better the lives of the people there instead of just taking his nanny back to the US with him.  I loved seeing the character development as he starts in a luxury RV with all the amenities he's been used to from a privileged family and growing up in the US, and then comes to face the harsh realities of what this village is still struggling with because of how isolated it is.  His nanny's niece (Gayatri Joshi) is pushing hard for education, but no one cares, there are still caste distinctions, child labor, illiteracy, and child marriage.  He tries to make a difference for these people because he learns to love them.

I think one of the most memorable parts is when he sets up a water driven generator to get stable electricity for the village, since any electricity there is very spotty and unstable.  I loved the look on this old person's face as they see their home lit with electricity for the first time.

It was a really beautiful film, and I loved it.  It was that touching sort of film you just need to watch every once in a while.
