Lagaan (2001)

I don't know why it took so long for me to watch this... no wait, I do.  It was a matter of availability.  At the time I couldn't seem to find it anywhere, but I kept hearing how wonderful it was, so I ended up just buying it for myself.  Then my friend (not the Disney Channel one, but one who actually appreciates good movies) wanted to watch it with me so I kept waiting for her, until I got fed up waiting and just watched it for myself.

This is an awesome movie.

It's got like a million awards and it's on cool lists like BBC's top 100 movies you need to see before you die, and Time's best 25 sports movies, etc.  It's a cricket movie, but it's also a historic taste of India during the British occupation and how they fought against suppression through cricket.

Also, it's Aamir Khan being all awesome again with his messages and meaningful films.  Also, since it's historic, he basically doesn't wear a shirt the whole movie.  Mmmmmm.

Aamir's character is Bhuvan, a young man from a village that is suffering from a drought and over taxation.  He leads the village to beg the Raja to lower the taxes, but he can't go against the British either.  Then Bhuvan makes fun of this cricket game and this douche British officer Russell gets mad at him and challenges him to a cricket match with the stakes being no taxes for three years if the Indians win.

They really don't have a chance until Russell's little sister, who takes interest in the locals, especially Bhuvan (I mean who wouldn't), and thinks her brother is being unfair, steps in to offer help.  She basically teaches then all the basics of cricket and helps them train so they can at least stand a chance against the mean British dudes.  Then there is a bit of a love triangle as the British chick falls for Bhuvan, but he doesn't speak English and she doesn't speak Hindi or whatever he speaks, so there is a lot of confusion.  Also there is a little indian girl who is in love with Bhuvan, and she can tell that the British chick likes her man, so there is a bit of tension there.

Then there is the awesome cricket match.  It's a good one.  I was cheering along as if it were a live match.  It's pretty awesome.

Seriously, so glad I finally watched it.  The cruel irony of it was that it became available to stream on Netflix after I finally bought and watched it, and is much more available now.  So none of you have the same excuse I had to put off watching it.  Don't do it, cause it's a seriously awesome movie and you should all watch it like right away.

Favorite Song:
O Rey Chhori

This is also a great song:
Chale Chalo
This is like the training song, and it's quoted in Kal Ho Naa Ho, so watch for that next time you watch it.

Favorite Dance:
Ghanan Ghanan

Honestly, I think I could put every song on this list, that's how good they all are... so I will restrain myself and just tell you to watch this movie again.

  1. This is easily one of my all time favourite Bollywood movies (and probably a major reason Aamir is my Bollywood boyfriend ;) ). I am so glad you liked it. You could totally have borrowed it from me!

  2. I don't think we were good friends yet, or I just didn't think of it. I'm not sorry I own it though, since its basically amazing.

    1. Ah. That makes sense. I remember when I tried to buy it (back in 2006) that it was really hard to get a good copy. It really is one worth owning. I don't even know how many times I've watched it.

    2. I had meant to go see it when it was playing at the IC, but it was too hard to make it at those listed times.

  3. I LOVE Lagaan. It's my comfort movie. After I watched it in college, I was babbling about it to everyone and found out my friend is Aamir Khan's cousin. Then I was like when are you going to visit your family AND TAKE ME WITH YOU.
