Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
So, if you haven't already noticed, Yash Chopra is a very big name in Bollywood. The biggest probably. This movie is the last one he directed, and he must have thrown in every trope he ever does or ever has been done into one movie for one final wah-bam!
I was lucky to have seen this at a Bollywood party (which are the best parties ever) and so experienced everyone's reactions during the film, and especially when Shahrukh kissed. That's right he kissed the girl. Ew!!!!!! It felt so dirty, because as you know there usually isn't any kissing in Bollywoods, and even if there is it's only in Saif Ali Khan type movies, not Shahrukh Khan movies.
I had heard that Shahrukh had stated that he wouldn't kiss in any of his films, so maybe that's why we all assumed it would never happen. I guess the world is changing and Yash Chopra can do whatever he wants in his last film.
I think that, besides the gross kiss, that the reason that I didn't like this film as much as I could have was because I didn't like the girl. I'm not a super big fan of Katrina Kaif and I'm not really sure why. I think that it's maybe that I'm not super impressed with her acting, but maybe it's just because I really hated her character in this one. Probably because she made Shahrukh shave his hot beard off. Evil.
So we've got Anushka Sharma's character, Akira, who is working for like Discovery or a big documentary company like that, and she's also a bit of a dare devil and she meet's this cool bad-a soldier Samar (Shahrukh). He works in the bomb-squad and he never uses the gear. He just goes in, defuses the bomb, and obviously has a death wish or something. He's very gruff and naturally thinks that Akira is annoying, but she gets a hold of his diary and learns the story of why he's like that and decides to do a documentary of him and his troop. Naturally they become friends. That was the part of the film I liked. Shahrukh is a pretty hot bad-a soldier dude.
Then we hear his story about how he lived in London and fell in love with Meera (Katrina Kaif) who is probably the most superstitious girl, and they fall in love, kiss (EW!!!!) and are broken up by every trope imaginable. There is car accidents, amnesia, lies, bargains with deity, bets against deity, love triangles, etc. It was quite ridiculous. Oh well, it's not like I hated the film, I just hated one of the girls. But I guess people are allowed to make stupid mistakes, even when it ruins other peeps happiness. It's the classic trope of "noble idiocy" I hate it, but it's like in every drama ever. Would be a much shorter drama/film if everyone was just honest and talked things out.
Maybe it was a little too westernized for my taste. But I could just really hate that kiss and can't get over it. That's probably the case. It's not a bad movie. It's just wah-bammy.
