Veer-Zaara (2004)
This is just what I needed after picking two in a row that were not what I needed. But it's yet another one destined to make you cry. It also has a lot to do with the lameness of politics and prejudice, and a little bit progressiveness and women's rights.
It starts out with Shahrukh in prison and Rani coming to visit him to hear his story. She is a lawyer, one of the first female lawyers in Pakistan, and she is here to defend this Indian man who's been unjustly imprisoned for like 22 years. Of course, it was all because of love.
Veer (Shahrukh) is like an airforce pilot from India and Zaara (Preity Zinta) is a rich girl from Pakistan. They meet when Zaara is bringing her Sikh nanny's, or Bebe's, ashes back to India for burial. Veer saves her in this bus accident and they fall in love as he accompanies her on her journey, and additional tour of Punjab (her Bebe's original home). He even take her to visit his home village. They part ways, realize that they love each other, try to make it work, and are cruelly separated (obviously since he ends up in prison) and then it's up to Rani to try and make things right.
It's another one of those bittersweet, heartbreaking, romance dramas that is really well done and might bring you to tears. It's Shahrukh, it definitely brought me to tears. It's not depressing, like Devdas, and really sweet. I highly recommend this one. Even though it made me a tiny bit angry. But that just proves how well it was made because I was totally invested in this couple and really angry when they got separated.
