Om Shanti Om (2007)
I think I judges this one too harshly when I watched it. Maybe because of how disappointed I was with Paheli, I really needed a high quality Shahrukh film. This one was just not quite that. It;s probably way better than I remember it being, but definitely on the more cheesy side, which was a problem for me at the time. But even as I am writing this, it is clearly an awesome movie, so I'm going to have to watch it again.
It's all about reincarnation, so you have to be open minded about that and then you'll be ok.
Om (Shahrukh Khan) is a nobody extra actor, but he has the biggest crush on Priya (Deepika Padukone) who is the hottest actress of the day. But she's got man problems as she was mixed up with this douchey director (Arjun Rampal, who is hot, but playing a bad guy, like always darn it). So peeps end up dying and being reincarnated and Om (now reincarnated and still named Om) has to reveal the murders of the past. So there is like a ghost in it too. It's pretty good. But it's also a bit cheesy, so that's why I judged it too harshly when I watched it. I should probably watch it again sometime to actually enjoy it.
It's really good when you think about how it makes a statement about both the 1970's film industry as well as the 2000's. I have to say I loved how it also made fun of Shahrukh's film career, or that of any huge star from a film family, as his reincarnated self is at the top of the film industry. I loved the part where he's nominated for an award for every one of the films he's been in that year, and they literally look like the same movie with a different girl.
The best part of the movie is this dance number at Shahrukh's birthday party that is basically the who's who of Bollywood, as a bunch of real Bollywood stars pop in as cameo guests. It starts with Rani Mukerji and goes through pretty much everyone. See how many you can name!
